Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without Late Night Shopping, when half of Lewes, and a good few people from outside of town, take advantage of the late opening hours to sort out their Christmas shopping… and fill up on mince pies and mulled wine.
We’re planning a great night for all residents and visitors alike. It’s not just the High Street that’ll be opening up later than usual: check out late-night shopping opportunities from AS Apothecary in Western Road, to Bags of Books in South Street… and don’t forget the Needlemakers.
This year, unfortunately the roads will be open to traffic, so please do keep to the pavements and pedestrian areas. And if you’re thinking of driving into Lewes, please do bear in mind there will be a lot more people about at that time of night than usual. All Lewes Pay & Display car parks are FREE to park after 5pm. This also includes the car park at County Hall at the top of St Anne’s Hill.
Each year we hope to raise as much money as possible for local good causes, this year we are thrilled to be raising funds for Sussex Search and Rescue. Volunteers will be out and about in the town all evening with collecting buckets. Sussex Search and Rescue are the primary volunteer resource used by Sussex Police to search for, and rescue, vulnerable missing people. They are on call 24 hours every day throughout the year. As a 100% volunteer organisation their members give their time free of charge and expect nothing in return but satisfaction from a job well done. They exist to serve the community of Sussex through the goodwill of their members and charitable donations.
So what's going on...
Barbican House, by the castle, will be welcoming guests to the Museum offering spinning demonstrations and a children’s trail round the galleries.
There’s plenty more treats and entertainments at the top of town, make sure you don’t miss out! The Christmas Craft Fair makes a welcome return this year at Lewes Town Hall (Fisher Street entrance). With over 60 stalls and free entry, you’ll be sure to find that unusual Christmas gift.
Popping up just for Christmas, to coincide with Lewes Late Night Shopping, Lewes-based artist, Kelly Hall is opening a festive pop up art gallery and gift shop at 2 Fisher Street from 7th-9th December. Kelly paints Modern Vintage artwork collections which are available to buy as signed art prints, greeting cards and homewares – perfect Christmas presents and stocking fillers. Special seasonal offers and festive treats will also be available.
Santa’s Grotto will take up residence once again in Lewes House on School Hill. It’s a lovely treat for the kids, but for parents as well with mulled wine while you wait.
Cliffe Precinct will have its usual festive stalls, food retailers and small children’s fairground style rides.
Harvey’s Brewery will host their traditional yard event from 6pm – 9pm where you’ll be able to enjoy music, a hog roast & BBQ, vintage vehicles, heavy horses and a well stocked bar, which will be serving the newly released Christmas Ale.
Blackpowder Morris Dancers will be dancing in the Cliffe area and we’re delighted to welcome back samba band Silver Sounds, Zu Choir and King's Church Choir, to entertain you while adding some razzmatazz to your shopping experience.
Lewes & District Dementia Action Alliance are holding a pop-up information point at SCDA Charity Shop near the War Memorial.
Twelve shops are taking part in this years Town Trail. Each shop will have a letter. Arrange the letters into a festive phrase below. Collect all 12 stamps, complete the anagram, fill in your contact details, tear out this page and hand it in to any of the participating shops. The first three entries drawn will win either a Harvey’s hamper, a £25 voucher for Bags of Books or a Viva stocking filled with goodies from local shops. The prize draw will take place on Friday 8th Dec. Don’t forget to take your Viva Lewes out with you!
